About For a Working Democracy
We’re rebuilding democracy where it matters most: on the ground, in communities across Ohio. With local leaders and partners, we’re showing that integrity and inclusion aren’t buzzwords. They’re the baseline.
For a Working Democracy brings together civic leaders, volunteers, and everyday Ohioans who are tired of politics-as-usual. From small towns to major cities, we’re rebuilding public trust by doing the hard work, connecting people, restoring accountability, and proving that public service can still serve the public.
Leadership & Founding Team
Led by experienced public servants and community organizers, our team sets the strategic vision for a movement that’s growing across Ohio.
Jay Wallace
Co-Founder
Chief Executive Officer
Jay Wallace is a mission-driven leader with a background in national service, civic engagement, and grassroots political organizing. As Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of For a Working Democracy, Wallace guides statewide efforts to build a more inclusive and forward-thinking political movement rooted in community solutions and cross-partisan collaboration. A former AmeriCorps NCCC member and active member of the Ohio Military Reserve, he brings a rare blend of civic and organizational experience to the work of rebuilding trust in government and empowering everyday Ohioans to lead meaningful change.
Brian P. Barnes
Co-Founder
Board Chair & Chief Political Officer
Brian Barnes is a former U.S. Naval Reserve Lieutenant Commander, prior congressional candidate, and civic strategist whose career bridges public service, politics, business and science research/communication. A veteran of two presidential campaigns and Co-Founder of For a Working Democracy, Barnes leads efforts to rebuild trust and accountability in American politics. His current work explores how nations renew themselves when democratic consensus begins to fracture, focusing on the ideas, values, and leadership needed to restore unity and purpose in a divided age.
For a Working Democracy didn’t start as a think tank or a campaign. It started as a gut check, born from frustration with a broken system, and built on the belief that fairness and accountability should be the rule, not the exception.
Together, we’re proving that better politics is possible.
